My main worry with the fact that Lydia is going to be posting vlog while Lizzie is at Pemberley is that I think it’s going to start to make more and more people take sides. So far the fandom, on the whole, has seemed pretty reasonable about the whole thing, but now we have two opposing narratives, each of which will (probably) have a negative impact on the other. Lydia’s partying will eventually tear Lizzie away from Pemberley, and I don’t think it’s inaccurate to suppose that Lizzie’s growing fondness for Pemberley and the Darcy family will help spur Lydia’s “downfall.”
In the past, Lydia’s storyline has been nicely parallel to Lizzie’s. Though interconnected, Lydia’s videos have always been her own. Struggles with grades, her friendship with Mary, and running away to visit Jane: those were all her own story arcs completely independent from Lizzie. We could watch Lydia’s videos one day, and Lizzie’s the next, care about both of them, and not feel like either was taking away from the other. But now they are in direct competition, and I think it’s going to be hard not to a) be frustrated with Lydia for her negativity and for taking some of the happiness away from the Pemberley arc, or, b) be frustrated at Lizzie for pursing her own happiness while her sister is caught in a downward spiral. I’m not saying that people will have to take sides, or that they should, just that I’ve seen both of these sentiments around already, and I’m sure they are only going to be exacerbated by this division of the storyline.
When it comes down to it, both Lizzie and Lydia deserve to have their stories told. But I think, depending on how Lydia’s vlogs are handled, that trying to tell each story at the same time could end up being a disservice to both. I hope not, and after this post I’m going to try and stop jumping to conclusions, but I think it’s important to acknowledge the fact that both of these ladies are awesome, and both deserve happiness…just not at the price of the other’s.
